He knows who you are; he has all of your necessary and personal financial information downloaded on his computer. You, however, know nothing about him. You probably don't even know his real name, because many debt collectors use fake names, called "desk names" in the industry. The collector on the phone with you is just one cog in a multi-billion dollar industry. He has attended seminars and has had training and experience in how to make you pay, what to say to you, and how to ruin your credit. The collector belongs to several professional collector groups, and has attended professional conventions. At these conventions, industry representatives discuss tactics and techniques for collecting money that work and don't work. Tricks of the trade. SCAMS. The representatives attend these conventions with lawyers who represent them against lawsuits brought by consumer protection attorneys. The industry lawyers discuss how to quash other lawyers who've attempted to battle their various schemes. (Are you getting upset yet?)
Some businesses even run collector "camps." The debt collector gathers up his hard-to-collect accounts, and off to camp he goes. There he will learn not only what to say, but what tone of voice to use on the phone with you ; when he ought to be angry, and when he should converse nicely. These camps assist him to sharpen his skills and techniques. YOU ARE NO MATCH FOR THE PROFESSIONAL DEBT COLLECTOR.
He has studied at length how to get into your psyche and control you. You, on the other hand, have just probably suffered a crisis in your life, such as loss of a marriage, a job, or health issue, and are wallowing in despair. The debt collector knows you're probably suffering from self-pity, and has been taught a variety of strategies to manipulate those feelings, and make you converse.
A person standing alone is no match for someone so trained, with so much money behind them. This is accepted as so obvious that the law itself regards the average person as "the least sophisticated consumer." The label applies to anyone, regardless of their education. The assumption by the courts is that the consumer knows nothing, and is no match for the industry. Now you know what you're up against.
